At 5pm on 4th February, 1915, the 1st York & Lancaster battalion of 83 Brigade, 28th Division moved from billets in the Infantry barracks at Ypres and took over reserve trenches running from Ferme La Chapelle to the Chateau Lankhof. From here one company was sent to assist the 2nd East Yorkshire battalion who had been attacked while holding the front line trenches and forced to withdraw around 80 yards to support positions. That evening the company of 1st York & Lancaster took part in an unsuccessful attempt to retake these lost trenches and suffered some casualties, including Alfred Blackhall. |
